e Synopsis (Not for Publication)

The time is the mid-19th Century and the place is London. Mr. Jonathan Tibbs (Kenneth More) is called upon to save his uncle’s gunsmith business from bankruptcy. Tibbs, an in- veterate romantic, decides to introduce the western frontier of America to Tibb’s guns, which are, he claims, more than a weapon, rather a way of life.

Travelling by stage, he persuades a band of hostile Indians to cease attacking the coach after first disarming their chief. When they arrive in Fractured Jaw, Tibbs is a hero.

Tibbs, after frightening off some town toughs quite by acci- dent, is declared a holy terror by the town. He lodges in Kate’s Hotel, run by the buxom Kate (Jayne Mansfield). She takes an immediate dislike to him since she fails to understand his strange, English ways.

In the midst of a local ranch war, Tibbs unwittingly becomes sheriff when Mayor Masters (Henry Hull) gets him drunk and swears him in. The rival ranch gangs each think he is on the side of the other, but he disarms the top gunmen of each group through a fluke.

Kate and Tibbs fall in love and Tibbs is captured by Indians. They turn out to be the same tribe whose chief Tibbs had spared and he is made a blood brother.

Returning to Fractured Jaw, which.is.already mourning his death, Tibbs reveals that he has sold ‘all his fowling pieces to the Indians without realizing that no white man ever sells arms to the Indians.

At the same time, the rival range gangs decide to join forces and destroy him. He is saved by the Indians who help bring peace. The tribal chief acts as father of the bride at his and Kate’s wedding.

Jayne Mansfield, starring in Twentieth Century-Fox’s Cine- masScope, De Luxe Color film, “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” didn’t tell Producer Daniel M. Angel, Director Raoul Walsh, co- star Kenneth More or any others of the members of the cast or crew until the very last days of shooting that she was expecting a baby. Said Jayne: “I thought it might interfere with our work- ing arrangement. Men are such worriers.”

A Spanish doctor, assigned to location with Twentieth Cen- tury-Fox’s “The Sheriff of Frac- tured Jaw” in Spain, had glam- orous Jayne Mansfield for a nurse when he had to perform an emergency operation on an extra who had been bitten by a deadly scorpion.

Victor El Lobo, a Spanish farmer living near Torredones, where Twentieth Centurv-Fox’s “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw” was filmed in Spain, complained to district military police that he had been attacked by a band of hostile savages. Upon investi- gation, it was found that he had run into a band of extras in In- dian dress who were filming a scene with stars Kenneth More and Jayne Mansfield.

Jacob Hay, author of the orig- inal short story from which “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw” was filmed by Twentieth Century- Fox, is a former reporter for the famed Baltimore Sun. Hay wrote many of his stories in between assignments on the paper.

Jayne Mansfield won over the residents of the small Spanish village of Colemenar where much of “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw” was filmed by inviting many of them to have dinner with her family and herself. For these occasions, Jayne cooked Spanish dishes herself.

When U.S., and Canadian audiences see Twentieth Cen- tury-Fox’s “The Sheriff of Frac- tured Jaw,” they may also see friends or relatives. For many extras in the Jayne Mansfield, Kenneth More starrer are Amer- icans and Canadians living in local bases and towns.

Kenneth More, starring with Jayne Mansfield in “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” Twentieth Century-Fox production filmed in CinemaScope and De Luxe Color in Spain, conducted side expedi- tions around the Spanish coun- tryside during time off from the comedy-western. More is an ar- dent amateur archeologist and was searching for early Roman relics.

‘The Sheriff...’

Kenneth More is the English- man who finds himself elected “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw” in the Twentieth Century-Fox comedy now at the... . Thea- tre. The CinemaScope, De Luxe Color film was directed by Raoul Walsh and co-stars Jayne Mans- field. Mat 1B

Past History

Director Raoul Walsh, the mas- ter Hollywood film-maker whose name has been on some of the most exciting and successful mo- tion pictures of recent years, reached far back in his own past for actors and material to use in Twentieth Century-Fox’s “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” cur- rently at the.... Theatre.

After having secured two of the top comedy stars in the world for his leads—Britisher Ken- neth More and America’s own Jayne Mansfield—Walsh cabled the semi-retired Henry Hull, the dean of western actors, to play the role of the mayor of ‘Frac- tured Jaw.’

Hull and Walsh go back to |

the old Biograph Picture Corp. of 1912, when Hull was a slen- der young juvenile and Walsh a hopeful director.

Although Hull has played this same kind of role so often he

can “even anticipate the lines,” | comes through as a polished and

he brought to the CinemaScope, De Luxe Color picture a new and solid verve and fire.

Walsh, whose credits include “Battle Cry,” and “The Naked and the Dead,” also called on Jonas Applegarth, a former stunt. man who is a full-blooded Cree Indian.

Applegarth, who plays the part of a savage Indian chief in the Daniel M. Angel produced film, was also with Walsh on some of his earlier films.

“The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” a comedy-western, is only one of the examples of Walsh’s versatility.

Filming entirely in Spain, a country Walsh knows and loves, the film manages to carry though a real western feel.

The Big War

The first day of shooting in Spain on the location set of Twentieth Century-Fox’s “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” now at the.... Theatre, was almost the last.

Director Raoul Walsh had everything ready, and stars Ken- neth More and Jayne Mansfield were in place, when a series of high power shells came whistling overhead. Everybody ducked for cover while Walsh jumped in a jeev to investigate.

What he found was half the Spanish Army closing in on their location spot just outside of the town of Torredones.

It was the annual Spanish Army maneuvers and, but for the interest in Miss Mansfield on the part of Spanish officers, the filming might have had to stop right there and then.

After a party for the Army staff and the stars, a special radio command station was set up in the town and, after that, whenever the soldiers came too close to the town, Walsh just informed headquarters and they moved in the opposite direction.

The film tells of a mild-man- nered Englishman who arrives in ‘Fractured Jaw’ to sell guns and is pressed into the role of sheriff.

From then on, the film goes from hilarity to insanity as Ken- neth More, as the sheriff, teaches westerners how to be western.

No Bull For Jayne

Although Jayne Mansfield con- quered Spanish newspapermen and the general public with her charm while on location with Twentieth Century-Fox’s “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” now at the.... Theatre, she refused to take part in Spain’s national sport—bullfighting.

Jayne is dead set against kill- ing of any sort, and would not attend any bullfights in Spain, even though she was asked by the president of the Madrid bull rng himself. She stars in the

inemaScope, De Luxe Color comedy-western with British co- median Kenneth More.

A Bit Of Morley

Robert Morley, distinguished British comedian, appears in Twentieth Century-Fox’s “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw” in a Cameo performance along with stars Kenneth More and Jayne Mansfield.

Morley plays the role of a wealthy English gun-maker in the CinemaScope, De Luxe Color comedy-western currently at the

... Theatre.

The New Jayne

Jayne Mansfield, astronomi- cally figured star of Twentieth Century-Fox’s “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” opening .... at the ... . Theatre, appears in a new kind of role in the hilarious comedy-western.

Cast by Producer Daniel M. Angel and Director Raoul Walsh opposite British star, Kenneth More, Miss Mansfield is the op- erator of a western cafe-bar in the fun-filled story of an Eng- lish gentlemen who comes West to sell arms and stays to tame a tough cow town.

With a new-found sense of comedy timing and a whole new approach to her work, Jayne manages to more than hold her own against the brilliant comedy ability of More in the title role.

In past pictures, Jayne has used sounds, strutting and other attention-getters to carry off her roles; but in ‘Fractured Jaw’ she

effective comedienne.

Featuring Henry Hull with Bruce Cabot and the late Ronald Squire in Cameo performances, the picture is the prime vehicle for “The New Jayne Mansfield.”

According to preview audi- ences, she brings to the picture a quality not unlike that of the great Mae West, but with the softer, warmer overtones of a Marilyn Monroe.

Filmed entirely in Spain, the picture is in CinemaScope and De Luxe Color.

| Fractured Jaw’

Problem Film

“The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” Twentieth Century-Fox’s Cine- maScope, De Luxe Color produc- tion starring Kenneth More and Jayne Mansfield, now at the.... Theatre, racked up an unusual score of problems, even for a location film.

Producer Daniel M. Angel and Director Raoul Walsh are each experts at location filming and are well-equipped to handle the usual problems that working with a vast crew and staff in a strange land entails.

But, they hadn’t counted on the Spanish countryside or tem- perament.

At one point, they found them- selves in the middle of maneu- vers with the entire Fifth Span- ish Army Corps arrayed against them. No amount of pleading would convince the Army officers to postpone their maneuvers and let them continue filming.

Then, Jayne Mansfield sweetly asked the general staff officers i ik away for a while—and they

id.

Later, a Spanish farmer called military police when he ran into a band of extras painted up as warpathing Indians and claimed they tried to scalp him.

At one point in the filming of the comedy-western that tells of a mild-mannered English gun salesman who is tricked into be- coming the sheriff of a tough western cattle town, so many soldiers and civilians lined hills around the filming areas watch- ing the production, that the huge CinemaScope cameras couldn’t traverse their entire distance.

Kenneth More, playing the title role, injured his back in England and in one of the action scenes re-injured it. It was only through good old Anglo-Saxon stubbornness that he prevented the Spanish doctor assigned to the film from ordering him to Madrid for treatment. This would have shut down the whole opera- tion.

In the end, the film-makers brought in one of the most howl- ingly funny comedies made here or abroad in years, but they alone knew just how un-funny it was at certain points in the making.

‘Sheriff’ On Way

Twentieth Century - Fox’s laugh-studded CinemaScope, De Luxe Color production of “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” star- ring Kenneth More, Jayne Mans- field and featuring a prominent Cameo cast, will open for its local premiere... Theatre.

Spanish Locale Proves Perfect

When Producer Daniel M. Angel and Director Raoul Walsh de- cided to make the hilariously funny saga of “The Sheriff of Frac-

tured Jaw,” current attraction at the...

. . Theatre, they decided

that three things were essential: (1) Kenneth More, the popular English comedian, (2) Jayne Mansfield, the statuesque beauty who has developed from a pure glamor girl into one of the funniest comediennes in films and (8) an unusual location.

With stars More and Mansfield secured, the film-makers headed for one of the most unusual of all unusual location spots for a western film, the Spanish highlands.

There, near the towns of Colemenar, Torredones, El Ardo and in the province of Aragon, they found just what they wanted—a never-before photographed rolling highland and several verdant,

watered valleys.

Along the plains of Aragon where 18th and 19th century armies wheeled and turned with clockwise precision in the Napo- leonic and Spanish Succession wars—Director Walsh set up elab- orate outdoor sets, a town, corrals and a complete Indian village.

From a nearby gypsy encampment, he hired crack riders to play both cowboys and savage tribesmen, These were men whose an- cestors rode into Spain with countless armies of invaders, and they are, even in this day and age, born into a saddle.

From Colemenar to Aragon the film company and crew enacted the American wild west story, often with Spanish police, army and civilian observers so close that the arc of the huge CinemaScope, De Luxe Color cameras were limited. :

In the end, when the last of the exciting action, and laugh-mak- ing comedy scenes had been filmed, they placed the most accurate western film, as well as one of the funniest western films ever made, in the cans. And, but for the special effect of the untouched Spanish back-drop which lends an extra quality to the picture, it might easily have been made 80 years ago in the real West.

Although antagonistic in the beginning, Jayne Mansfield eventually finds herself allied with Kenneth More as he is attacked by rival ranch gangs in this scene from the CinemaScope, De Luxe Color

film, “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” now at the

see « Lheatre: Mat 2C

it never before filmed, the pic- ture tells of Kenneth More and his trip to America where he hopes to “civilize” the natives by introducing them to “Tibbs fowling pieces,” a wonderful gun for shooting quail but not quite up to the meat-and-pota- toes duty of the American fron- tier.

What he does do is become the sheriff of a tough cattle town, earn a reputation as a fast gunfighter, fall in love with Jayne, who plays the most cur- vacious and unobtainable cafe owner in the West, and become a blood brother of a hostile In- dian tribe.

With a side-splitting situation build-up which is so funny that it can make an Indian laugh, More brings peace to the town, civilization to the Indians (to whom he sells his fowling pieces) and marriage to himself and Jayne. And no bride ever given away by a savage war chief ever looked lovelier.

_In picking Spain as the loca- tion spot for the film, which was written by Arthur Dales from an original short story by Jacob Hay, Producer Daniel M. Angel and Director Raoul Walsh took a gamble on an experiment which has certainly paid off.

The majestic mountains, the beautiful trout streams, the roll- ing grasslands and the ancient monastery of Molinar de Ara- gon give an extra dimension to the picture.

“The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,” Twentieth’s gift to laugh- loving audiences, also features such favorites as Henry Hull, as the conniving mayor of ‘Frac- tured Jaw,’ Bruce Cabot and the late Ronald Squire in Cameo performances.

More More

Kenneth More, star of Twen- tieth Century-Fox’s “The Sher- iff of Fractured Jaw,” opening

. at the.... Theatre, is as prone to humorous mishaps off screen as well as on.

For instance, on the first day’s shooting Raoul Walsh, di- rector of the CinemaScope, De Luxe Color comedy western ordered the star to get into a buckboard and drive over a hill and return.

More, with a wave to co-star Jayne Mansfield, leaped to the seat of the buckboard, whipped up the horses and raced over the hill. Walsh and the camera crew waited and waited and waited but More didn’t return for forty-five minutes. The rea- son he gave when he finally did return was: “They (the horses) are a lot easier to start than to stop.”

Accidents like these always seem to happen to More. When he starred in “Genevieve,” a 1905 automobile ran out of control at the breakneck pace of 16 miles an hour and carried him well beyond the camera’s range.

At the end of this incident, More said simply: “Man is su- perior to the machine, so I just let it go until it got tired.”

In “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw.” the hilarious story of an English gun salesman who be- comes the law officer of a wild western town, More once again brings to the screen his genius for comedy which is as much a part of the real More as it is a job of acting.

You may also want to send several to your newspaper friends as souvenirs of your en- gagement.

© Local novelty: shop can supply you with a series of sheriff badges to give away to the kids attending your opening or matinee performance. Publicize this giveaway with lobby signs.

e Kenneth More’s portrayal of a gun salesman in the CinemaScope picture suggests a lobby display, glass encased, of various types of firearms, circa 1880, the time of the story. Work with local gunsmith to effect this display.

e Theatrical supply house in your area may be able to give you several items generally associated with Indians for your lobby. Strive for Indian head-dress, perhaps even a tepee, etc., to sug- gest the theme of the picture to all customers and passersby.

e Play the recording of ‘The Valley of Love” over your p.a. sys- tem and at intermission during your engagement of ‘‘The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,’ to both heighten interest in the song and the motion picture.

e Rent or borrow a buckboard and drape its sides with the colorful posters and accessories available from NSS for ‘The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw.” Dress one of your ushers in a conservative, English-type suit, and have him drive the buckboard around town advertising your playdate. When not in use, park it at your curb and post a special sign reading: “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw’ is inside.”

¢ Post stickers around town with this theme: “The Sheriff of Frac- tured Jaw’—So Funny It Could Even Make An Indian Laugh.” Spot these at intersections, in co-operating merchants’ stores, near schools, and any other heavily populated places around town. Also post similar stickers around town before you open, stating “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw’ is coming to (name of town).

20TH, MGM RECORDS PROMOTE CONNIE FRANCIS MOVIE SONG

Twentieth Century-Fox and the MGM Record Company have joined in an all-out music promo- tion on behalf of ‘‘The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw.”’ The record company’s popular young talent, Con- nie Francis, has cut a brand new record of the song, ‘‘The Valley of Love,’’ the beautiful ballad heard throughout the CinemaScope production. It’s a light and catchy number, one that’s sure to appeal to every age group which hears it.

To pre-sell this record all across the country prior to its December 15, 1958 release, Miss Fran- cis has embarked on a nationwide tour of night clubs, radio and TV shows, with particular em- phasis on disc jockeys, to introduce the song, and at the same time, spread the word on the hilari- ous comedy from which it comes. Upon her return to New York, the film company’s vast promotion wheels will swing into action, directing the major portion of its campaign at the big network TV shows and radio shows, on which Miss Francis will appear to sing the song. This kind of promotion activity is what gives invaluable aid to the success of a film engagement. By the time the picture is released, the whole country will know ... and sing .. . ‘‘The Valley of Love’’ from ‘‘The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw.”’

Full-Color Sheet Music

Great support will be given both the song and the movie from which it comes, with the sheet music of ‘The Valley of Love,’ published by the Feist, Miller, Robbins Music Corporation of 799 Seventh Avenue, New York City. It will be released current with the record and fea- tures a full-color montage effect on the cover, with Jayne Mansfield and Kenneth More, plus full credits to the Cine- maScope film. Music stores all across the country will have the sheet music in their racks so, in order to capitalize lo- cally on this promotion, follow the suggestions below.

Exhibitor Follow -Through

With just a little aggressiveness on your part, you can make ‘‘The Valley of Love’? and ‘‘The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw,’’ two of the best known titles in your town. As soon after December 15, 1958 as possible, and as far ahead of your play- date as possible, contact the proprietor of the local music shop, and the music department of your local variety store. Take along a supply of scene stills and posters and accessories available for this film, and offer them as keynotes to win- dow and in-store displays, built around several copies of the record and the colorful sheet music. Also work with your local disc jockeys to effect extra spins of the MGM record as your playdate draws near. You may also want to offer free copies of the record to the first 25 teenagers on line opening day; or even perhaps make a special tie-in with the music store for special reduced prices to kids who buy ‘‘The Valley of Love”’ and then want to see ‘‘The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw.” Use as many other music tie-ins as come to your mind. Here is a wonderful opportunity to make those grosses grow for this engagement.

FULL-COLOR STANDEE

In addition to the do-it-yourself standee suggested elsewhere on this page, National Screen Service has prepared an exciting full-color standee, featuring Jayne Mansfield and Kenneth More. The place for this standee is right up front, near your box-office, where everyone who comes into your theatre, or just passes by, will be exposed to your playdate message. It’s the kind of ex- citing, and funny, too, standee which promises to add jingles to your cash register. Make it a point to place it on view well be- fore you open and also arrange with friendly merchants to show it in their stores, or store windows. Surveys have shown that theatres which use standees to sell their attractions, get a larger percentage of the public’s movie money.
